Prague Day 1 - September 2018

A later flight than I'd have liked so we didn't land in Prague til 1740. However, a super speedy trip through customs and into town meant that we arrived in the city centre by 1830.

As soon as we got off the metro we were struck by how beautiful basically every building is and also how hot it was today.

Our air bnb is just off Old Town Square and as we passed it we noticed that the light was perfect so we took a wee detour through the square and snapped some quick photos. Like a dick I forgot my real camera so it is all phone photos this trip. Bealing.

Our air bnb host had emailed the code for the apartment so getting in was easy and we didn't have to hang about waiting for anyone. The apartment is small but perfectly formed and, as I mentioned, in an amazing location.

After checking out (czeching out?) the apartment for a bit we decided to head out for dinner.

En route we passed "Man Hanging Out", our first David Cerny sculpture of the holiday, which is Freud hanging in the air.

We'd decided on Cafe Lourve for dinner as it seemed to strike a balance of touristy for a reason but with good food. We weren't disappointed, the room was beautiful,  the service was excellent and the food was indeed delicious. Excellent value too at £30, including tip, for 2 mains, a side, 2 soft drinks, 2 beers, a hot chocolate and a strudel to share. I had the chicken breast in a creamy paprika sauce with homemade spaetzle and K had goulash with bread dumpling. We kinda shared both and while mine was good the goulash was especially tasty.

After dinner we wandered about for a couple of hours. It was still roasting. Our first stop was the weird Cerny sculpture of Kafka's head. After that we went to The beautiful Cafe Nona in the National Theatre. Unfortunately, they were closing just as we arrived for a private event but we still got a look around. I'd highly recommend it if you're into communist era design.

We continued our wander by walking along the river, stopping often to listen to music and to try and take photos of the castle which looked incredible all lit up. We even tried a selfie but it was a disaster, I don't know how the kids do them.

Eventually at about 10pm we arrived on Charles Bridge. It was absolutely rammed and you'd have thought it was mid-afternoon due to the amount of people. We went a stroll across, took some pics and then decided to call it a night.

A lot to do tomorrow and it is apparently to be 30 degrees - jings!

  • Sounds like Prague is well worth czeching out (that'll never not be hilarious). Amazing it's so hot. Sounds like you managed a lot for day 1, except it should have been strudel each!
