Prague day 4 photos

Prague Day 4

I'm sitting waiting to board the plane home so thought I'd get this updated early.

We had a lazy Sunday morning, K went down to the supermarket and got croissants and apples and we had breakfast in the apartment before heading out at about 1030.

The weather was a bit grey today but we only got caught in a wee bit of drizzle once so not as bad as we feared.

We jumped on the tram over to the Exhibition Palace/Veletrzni Palac to see some art. The museum is massive but unfortunately a lot of the permanent collection was closed til next week, typical. However, we did get to see Czech art from the mid 19th century and early 20th century and we paid for the Jiri Petrbok exhibition. The permanent collection was great and included some Mucha. The Jiri Petrbok stuff was great and we were glad we paid the extra for it. I'd recommend checking him out.

We had a wee chill in the cafe after with some deliciously moist chocolate and coffee cake and coffee. There hasn't been loads of decaf in Prague so it was actually my first coffee of the weekend!

We headed back into the City centre for lunch and went to the delightful Mistral Cafe. I recommend it highly, the food was good, the prices were reasonable and it was light and airy. We both had a homemade lemonade, cucumber for K and raspberry for me - yum! I had chicken schnitzel with mash and K had a club sandwich and they were both great. It was a perfect last meal in the city.

After that we just jumped on the metro then bus to the airport and got here too early as always.

Prague airport is weird, we went through electronic passport security straight away but our bags didn't get scanned til we got to our gate. We were super confused wandering through duty free when we hadn't been through full security.

Prague Airport top tip - what they call a food court is actually a really quiet old-school canteen with meals for under a fiver! Gutted we'd already eaten! Some of our fellow Scots were complaining that the food court didn't have a Burger King but I was delighted.

We had a bit of a boon where the screens hadn't announced our gate but the webaite had so we were able to get through security with no queuing. 10 mins later the queue was massive!

Just waiting to be bussed to the plane now but the whole trip has been wonderful. I'd definitely recommend a few days in Prague!

Prague Day 3 photos

Prague Day 3

We rammed more in today than we planned cos it looks like it might be raining tomorrow. I am therefore absolutely exhausted typing this so don't judge any typos!

We had planned to be at the castle by 9 to beat the crowds but we failed. We were still out reasonably early but not that early. Our first stop was a great coffee shop called Republica Coffee where k had coffee and a croissant with cream cheese and jam and I had a chai latte.

I wasnt ready to eat yet but got a freshly baked danish pastry and 2 apples from a supermarket for later and it cost about 60p!

We got all day tickets today and we definitely made the most of them. We jumped on a tram up to the castle and soon arrived to face massive queues. The castle grounds are actually free but you have to queue to get through security. You then have to queue again to buy tickets if you want to go into buildings. We went for the B level ticket which got us into about 5 different buildings for about £9. The cathedral is the most popular building and is beautiful. Top tip - you can actually go into the cathedral for free and take photos of the main hall, you just can't go round all the chapels. I thought it was worth the money but if you are on a budget or in a rush you could deffo enjoy yourself for free.

Post-cathedral we splashed out and had an al fresco hot chocolate and sacher torte right next door at the most overpriced place but it was worth it for the view.

The other building we went in were good too but it was sooooooo crowded by this time, massive tour groups everywhere. We enjoyed the views one last time and headed down the hill via a vineyard. Lots of photos were taken!

At the bottom we walked round and saw another Cerny sculpture, this one has 2 naked men peeing into a map of the Czech Republic. If you text a number they will pee your message apparently which is weird.

We had a lateish lunch at StreetBurger Bistro and it was incredible. I had a bacon cheese burger and K had a goats cheese salad and we shared chips. It was honestly the best burger I've had in a long time. I could eat it again tomorrow. It was also very reasonably priced considering it's location.

After that we came back to the apartment to regroup before heading out to see the Dancing House- it was good to see it but it def wasn't my favourite building I've seen. We jumped on a tram up to Wenceslas Sq but jumped back off again a stop later cos we saw a couple of sculptures similar to the hanging Freud one and we wanted to check them out.

We were soon back on the tram up to the square where we really wanted to see the upside down horse Cerny sculpture and it didn't disappoint. We'd seen a tip on Honest Guide about a cafe in a bookshop on the square with local prices and a 1st floor balcony over the square and it didn't let us down. We had a couple of drinks and a cake to share for a few pounds, the view was great and it wasn't even busy!

Our next trip was metro ride to see the TV tower. We were disappointed to find that the crawling babies are no longer on the side but it was amazing regardless! We also discovered incredibly difficult mini golf in TV Tower Park so we had to give it a go. It was so so hard but I'd defo recommend it. The important thing is that I won.

We then headed back to the castle side of the river to Kampa Park where the crawling babies now live, the are giant and creepy but I'm delighted we saw them. It was a twofer cos the Cerny yellow penguin sculpture is in the park too. There was an event on in the park with live music and lots of stalls so we hung about for a while and we had some delicious raspberry lemonade.

We walked back to the apartment to freshen up before dinner but we took a wee detour to see a final Cerny, his weird lit up embryo sculpture on a dark hidden corner.

Our dinner tonight was Mexican at Las Adelitas just off Old Town Square. It was the most touristy place we've eaten but the food was great and it was very reasonably priced so that is a win. They did do that annoying thing where they charged my card in pounds so ended up costing more but it was still well priced. We shared tortilla chips with 2 salsas, potato filled flautas and chicken enchiladas with rice and beans and every item was delicious. I had a couple of tequila cocktails and K went wild with a died coke!

After dinner it was quite late and we're old and exhausted so we just came back to the apartment to chill.

Prague Day 2 - part 2 photos

Prague Day 2 - part 2

We headed out for dinner at Next Door, unfortunately it wasn't next door to our apartment and was quite the schlep. I've walked more today than my gammy ankle would have liked.

We arrived and were shown to our seats which had a view of the kitchen, always a good sign. The restaurant is run by a celebrity chef who does Czech's answer to Kitchen Nightmares so we had high hopes for the meal. We weren't disappointed.

We started with some cocktails, an aperol spritz for me cos I'm a grown up and a Shirley Temple for K cos she is not. Then the waiter brought over some bread and a mystery spread - we think he said cheese and ham but who knows.

The reason we chose Next Door is because I saw a review online saying they did the best svickova so we both ordered that. It was basically the same thing I had at lunch but much much better. 2 thick, tender, slices of beef in a creamy sauce topped with cranberries served with bread dumplings. The bread dumplings came separately wrapped in a moist (cloth) napkin to keep them fresh. The waiter put 2 on each plate and left the rest for later. He arrived midway through the meal to top these up and also had a wee gravy boat of sauce which he poured onto our plates too. Very dramatic.  We also had a side of green beans which were cooked perfectly too.

I was super full and couldn't finish my main but for some reason we though sharing a dessert was a good idea. We got an ice cream sundae that the waiter poured hot chocolate sauce over when he brought it to the table. I was too full to eat much but K pushed on like a trooper.  The whole thing cost £43 including tip which considering the quality of the food, and the fancyness of the venue generally, seems like really good value.

On the way back to our apartment we stopped and some wee Xmas market like stalls but didn't buy anything. There was a weird pumpkin display that seemed really American.

We were heading back to the apartment to change but just as we arrived crazy super heavy rain started and thunder and lightening arrived. We were about 10 seconds away from the air bnb but still got soaked through so we decided just to call it a night! It has all stopped now so hopefully it will cool everything down, it doesn't seem to have yet though.

Castle tomorrow!
